Speak Life: Aligning Your Words with God’s Truth

The Power of Your Words and Mindset

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.”

Proverbs 18:21

This verse has been on my heart this week, and I feel led to share its significance with you.

Our thoughts flow from our hearts and out of our mouths, shaping the reality around us. This can be a beautiful thing, or it can be incredibly dangerous. If our words hold the power of life and death, shouldn’t we pause and reflect on what we are speaking into existence?

Proverbs 18:21 reminds us that our words have the ability to build up and inspire or to tear down and destroy. Think about a time when someone spoke encouragement into your life. How did it make you feel? It probably gave you hope, strengthened your confidence, or sparked new creativity.

But here’s something many of us overlook—this power doesn’t just apply to how we speak to others. It also applies to how we speak to ourselves.

The Mindset Shift We Need

God has been showing me the importance of aligning my words with His truth—words of appreciation, affirmation, and gratitude rather than lack and loss. This is part of renewing our minds (Romans 12:2). When we cultivate a mindset rooted in God’s Word, we begin to see His presence and provision in every aspect of our lives. This intentional practice of holy mindfulness is how we abide in Him.

Let’s be honest. If we’re constantly saying things like:

  • “Life is hard.”
  • “Nothing ever works out for me.”
  • “I’m not good at relationships.”
  • “I never have enough.”

What do you think will happen? We will continue to see and experience more of those very things. Our words reset our world. Our Words Have Power!

The Science of the Mind and the Spirit of God

The brain is an organ, but the mind is an organization of thoughts, beliefs, and patterns. When we allow God’s presence to renew our minds, we give Him access to reorganize our thinking and, in turn, our speaking. This realignment allows the Holy Spirit to recalibrate our hearts, shifting our mindset from burdens to blessings.

Mindfulness is key here. When we abide in Christ—when we dwell, remain, and stay present in Him—our perspective changes. Abiding isn’t just a feeling; it’s a posture. Where are you positioning yourself in relation to Christ? Are you aligning with His truth, or are you allowing negative thoughts to take root?

God promises us a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). He gives us unlimited access to Himself (John 3:34) and withholds no good thing from us (Psalm 84:11). In fact, Scripture tells us “we have the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16). This means we don’t have to be trapped in negative, limiting beliefs. We can choose to walk in His truth!

A Challenge for You (and Me!)

Imagine planting an apple tree and expecting oranges. That would be absurd, right? Likewise, if we continually allow negative, critical thoughts to dominate our minds, how can we expect to see positive, life-giving change in our lives? Proverbs 4:23 urges us to guard our hearts because everything we do flows from them.

I don’t know about you, but I want to see my life through the lens of appreciation, affirmation, and gratitude. How about you?

The Power of Our Words in Prayer

Recently, I shared a video about my Prayer Battle Plan Bible, where I’ve dedicated a section specifically for my thoughts. Because let’s be real—sometimes we’re not feeling particularly kind toward ourselves. But we can’t allow the enemy to steal our joy, kill our purpose, or destroy our peace. We must be intentional in speaking God’s truth over our lives.

Let’s start today. Choose words that bring life. Speak what aligns with God’s promises. And most importantly, shift your mindset to see yourself the way He sees you—loved, chosen, and victorious.
