How to Prepare for What You’re Praying For (Before the Blessing Comes)

Have you ever found yourself in a season where you’re praying hard—like really hard—for something? Maybe it’s a breakthrough in your finances. Maybe it’s the dream job, the right relationship, or even just a little more peace in your home. We often ask God for more—more opportunities, more time, more resources, more clarity.

But let me ask you a bold question:
Are you truly prepared for what you’re asking God to do in your life?
Or are you just hoping He drops it in your lap while you sit there binge-watching Netflix and avoiding your to-do list?

No shame, friend—we’ve all been there. But if we’re honest, many of us are more wishing than preparing. And while our God is a miracle-working God, He’s also a God of order, stewardship, and process.

So what if the blessing you’ve been waiting on hasn’t come yet… not because God’s ignoring you, but because He’s preparing you—or waiting on you to get ready?

Let’s take a look at three areas where preparation meets expectation, and how you can shift your focus from just waiting to partnering with God in the process. Keep reading to learn how to prepare for what you’re praying for.

How to prepare for what you’re praying for

1. Praying for More but Preparing for Less?

One of my favorite scriptures to quote when you’re waiting on God is Luke 16:10:

“Whoever is faithful with very little will also be faithful with much…”

It sounds beautiful, doesn’t it? But let’s be real—how often are we asking God for much when we haven’t even been faithful with the little we already have?

You PRAY, “Lord, bless me with a thriving business!” But…

  • Your desk looks like a tornado hit it.
  • Your planner is still in the wrapper.
  • Your inbox has 1,273 unread emails.
  • You haven’t even drafted a business plan, let alone followed one.

You PRAY, “Lord, send me a godly husband!” But…

  • You still speak to yourself with criticism, not love.
  • You haven’t dealt with the unforgiveness you carry from your last relationship.
  • You’ve been neglecting your spiritual growth, expecting someone else to complete you.

Here’s the truth: God doesn’t just give us blessings—He prepares us for them.
He cares more about your heart and its capacity to carry the blessing than just giving you what you asked for.

Because what good is a dream come true if it ends up crushing you?

2. Desire vs. Capacity

God knows your heart. He knows your dreams. He hears your prayers. And yes—He wants to bless you. But He also knows what you can actually handle.

Imagine handing a toddler the keys to a Ferrari. You wouldn’t do it—not because the car may not be theirs someday, but because they’re not ready yet. They are NOT yet ready for the BLESSING!

The same is true for you.

are you praying for…
  • A promotion at work
  • A successful ministry
  • A loving marriage
  • Financial overflow
  • Peace in your home

But here’s the thing: Desire alone doesn’t build capacity. Preparation does.

If you’re asking for more, you must grow the capacity to sustain more in these three key areas:

  • Spiritually: Are you staying rooted in God’s Word and prayer life, or are you only talking to Him when you need something? Blessings require spiritual stamina. The more God entrusts to you, the deeper your spiritual roots must go to handle the pressure and responsibilities.
  • Emotionally: Do you manage stress, comparison, and disappointment in healthy ways? Or do you spiral every time something doesn’t go your way? Big blessings bring big emotions. Without emotional maturity, success can be a trap rather than a triumph.
  • Financially: Are you managing what you have now with wisdom? Or are you living paycheck to paycheck, hoping more money will fix everything? God won’t bless poor stewardship with increase. If you’re faithful over the little, He can trust you with more.

3. Your Training Ground Season

Sometimes the waiting season feels like punishment, doesn’t it?!? Like God’s holding out on you. But what if He’s not saying No—He’s just saying Not yet?

Let’s take a look at David. He was anointed king as a teenager… but what did he do next? Go straight to the palace? Nope. He went back to tending sheep.

Joseph had a prophetic dream of leadership and greatness… and then spent years being sold, imprisoned, and forgotten.

God wasn’t being cruel—He was preparing him… Preparing him to be in a position to save countless lives, including the lives of his brothers. (The very ones who sold him)

Because the calling on your life is too important to step into unprepared.
Your waiting season isn’t wasted. It’s your training ground.

  • You’re not just stuck—you’re being stretched.
  • You’re not being ignored—you’re being instructed.
  • You’re not being punished—you’re being prepared.

Your Challenge This Week

I want to challenge you this week to shift your prayers in a powerful way. Instead of only asking God for the blessing you’re longing for—whether it’s a relationship, a promotion, a fresh start, or peace of mind—begin asking Him to prepare you for it as well. Ask Him to shape your character, build your discipline, deepen your faith, and align your habits with the future you’re praying for. Sometimes the delay isn’t denial—it’s divine preparation. So don’t just pray for the what—invite God into the how and the who you’re becoming in the process.

Take some time this week to sit with the Holy Spirit and journal through these questions:

After you spend time with the LORD, don’t be surprised if he asks you to…

Whatever he asks – DO IT!!! Take that next right step. I get it that sometimes it is hard to know what that next right step is.
